The future's still bright

The past week has been a nightmare for all Forest fans. This has been an emotional period for me as it has been for many other Trickys. Just when you thought the clubs financial situation couldn't get any worse it did.

This week the shares in Nottingham Forest PLC were suspended. This happened because the company failed to produce its accounts. This has lead to endless speculation about the future of the football club. None of the supporters know what is happening because the board hasn't made a statement and many fans fear for the future of the club. It's no secret that Forest are in a bad financial state. Every week you seem to read about the mess down at the City Ground but are the finances that poor that we can't even produce the accounts?

The club is in a bad financial situation but it's not as terrible as some parts of the media would like you to think. Throughout the past week certain sections of the press have stated that they believe Forest would go out of business within the next few weeks, which is rubbish. We are in a mess but not to the extent that we may go bankrupt before Christmas. The people in charge down at the City Ground wouldn't let that happen.

The media have speculated that there could be a number of reasons why the accounts haven't been published. There are two main theories that have been mentioned. The first one involves the court case between Forest and two directors. As we all know the club won the court case back in June but it has been taken to the court of appeal. The case will be heard some time in February, which means that Nigel Doughty can't really invest in the club until the case has been settled. This has led to speculation that the board have suspended the shares so that when the court case is over Mr Doughty can buy the club on the cheap. Another theory is that we suspended the shares and withheld the accounts because somebody is interested in buying the club. This could be Nigel Doughty or I have heard another rumour that Nottingham Fashion designer Paul Smith is interested in Forest. Smith was interested in buying the club when the Bridgeford consortium took over and this rumour may be true. Nobody knows anything about the financial position at the club until the board comes out and tells us the truth.

The latest reports suggest that Nigel Doughty has put together a rescue package with Natwest bank. These reports haven't been confirmed but there seems to be a lot of truth behind the story. This would be great for the club and all Forest fans hope it's true and the club can move forward and plan for the future.

I believe that somebody will buy Forest and it's most likely to be Nigel Doughty. He is probably waiting for the court case to finish then he will make his move. I just hope that the club isn't forced to sell some of our quality youngsters to keep the bank away in the meantime. Jenas has been attracting interest from top Premiership clubs but I don't believe he would want to leave simply because of Paul Hart. Like many of the young players the respect they have for Hart is fantastic and many of them won't want to leave but I fear they may have to go. Prutton and Williams are the other youngsters that have attracted interest and the board will have to decide which is the best way forward for the club's future.

It's a shame that our financial position is dominating the headlines instead of the football the team is playing. The lads have been playing some fantastic footie this season but they haven't got the praise they should from the media. Although we are in midtable, the quality down at the City Ground has been superb and the future still looks bright even though the financial state is poor. Paul Hart deserves a lot of credit for what he is doing. He has had no money to spend and the style of football is still better then what we have seen for many years. Paul Hart is Forest through and through and with him at the helm this club is going places.

After the home game against Gillingham I think Paul Hart's post match comments said it all:

"The supporters played a big part. There had been talk of protests beforehand but our fans are above all that. We're trying to build a family - we're trying to build a club that we can be proud of. I've asked the supporters to stick with us and the quality of their backing has been outstanding. They're above protests. There are people who are working all hours to try put this situation right and I think we will."

Those sentences show how much Nottingham Forest means to him and he is desperately trying to produce the kind of team and atmosphere that Forest are known for and he will. No matter what the media say we all know that the future is bright. Throughout all this the fans will get behind Paul Hart and the team because at the end of the day we all want what's best for Forest.

At the start of the season we were told that it would be a rollercoster ride and it sure is. Over the next few weeks the club may have to do things that we don't agree with but as long as the supporters keep the faith then Forest will be okay. At the end of the day this club has a number of bright youngsters and we have a bright future ahead of us no matter what you hear in the media. This club is life and death to many people including myself and we need to get behind the team during these difficult times. It's time for us to unite and show everyone how strong Nottingham Forest really are.

Keep the Red flag flying high.
