LTLF Awards 2002

Player of the Season: Jon Olav Hjelde

Jon Olav Hjelde

This season Jon finally proved what he is capable of when he stays fit. His dominating performances at the back have been vital for Forest and made sure the Reds finished the season with one of the best defensive records in the division. He won the LTLF Player of the Season award with over 50% of the votes, with the club's official Player of the Season Gareth Williams finishing second with only 16% of the vote, closely followed by David Prutton (9%) and Darren Ward (8%).

Young Player of the Season: Gareth Williams

Gareth Williams

Despite missing out on the overall award, Forest's 20-year-old Scottish midfielder secured the Young Player award with a landslide of 55% of the votes. Gareth's outstanding displays in midfield have caught the eye of a number of top clubs, but at the moment he remains Forest's hottest young player. He beat off competition from Jermaine Jenas (18%) and two-time winner of this award, David Prutton (12%).

Most Improved Player: Jim Brennan

Jim Brennan

This was Brennan's third season at Forest and in it he finally proved that he was worth the £1.5m that David Platt spent on him in 1999. With Alan Rogers sold to Leicester, Jim was allowed to make the left-back spot his own and was very impressive with it. He won the award with 50% of the vote, ahead of previous winner Marlon Harewood (25%) and Riccy Scimeca (15%).

Best Match: Crystal Palace (Home)

Stern John scores

It was only the second home game of the season, but it stuck in the minds of many Forest fans and was enough to win 40% of the votes. The 4-2 win in which Prutton, Harewood, and John (2) found the net was thought to be the best match of the season ahead of the nil-nil draw at Highfield Road (29%) and re-match against Coventry at the City Ground which finished 2-1 to the Reds (21%).

Twat of the Season: Neil Warnock

Neil 'Ugly' Warnock

Always a popular award, and Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock joins the likes of Irving Scholar and Michael Branch as Twat of the Season with a resounding 50% of the votes. He was up against some tough competition with Roy Keane (20%) and the ITV Digital monkey (16%) coming in behind him, but his continual moaning and his part of the 'Battle of Bramall Lane' incident earned him his place on our awards.

World Cup Awards 2002

It's not every year you get a World Cup, so this year's LTLF Awards included a number of World Cup-related awards.

Best Player of the World Cup: Ronaldo (Brazil)

Ronaldo

He may have a funny haircut, but Ronaldo was undoubtedly the star of the World Cup. After years of injuries that threatened his career, the Brazilian superstar once against asserted his place on the world map of football with a number of star performances and eight goals. He secured a World Cup-winners medal and the golden boot award, and now he can add the LTLF award to his list of credentials having won 47% of the votes, ahead of England's Rio Ferdinand (23%) and Germany's Oliver Kahn (20%).

Best England Player: Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand

Having finished as runner-up of our overall vote, Rio stormed through as the best England player with an amazing 84% of the votes. He beat off competition from future Manchester United teammates Nicky Butt (7%) and David Beckham (4%) but his performances in the World Cup this summer have put him in the 'World Class' category.

Best Ireland Player: Damien Duff

Damien Duff

Duff was widely acknowledged as boosting his reputation over the summer to one of Ireland's biggest stars and one of the Premiership's hottest talents. His games on the wing helped Ireland reach the second round, and he also got a goal along the way. He won the Irish award with nearly 60% of the votes, followed by goal-scoring hero Robbie Keane with 28%. Shay Given and Matt Holland both scored around 5%.

Best 'Giant Killers': Senegal

Senegal's Diouf battles with France

LTLF loves the underdog, so we decided to honour those teams who beat the odds and caught everyone by surprise. And no-one did this more so than those plucky South Africans, Senegal. Of course, now they are all Premiership stars worth millions, but when they beat France in the opening game, it was one of the biggest shocks of any World Cup ever, which is why they received 47% of the votes, followed by hosts South Korea with 35%. Turkey and USA both scored 9%.

Best football 'song': Ant & Dec - "We're On The Ball"

Ant & Dec

The World Cup is the perfect time for B-list celebrities to turn their hand to making records all in the name of football. Terry Venebles had a go with "England Crazy" (12%), and those perennial football-songsters Fat Les offered us the fantastic "Who Invented Fish & Chips?" (10%). But it was those cheeky Geordie chappies Ant & Dec who won through with the dreadful "We're On The Ball" which got 35% of votes. Bell & Spurling's "Golden Balls" (with a b-side of the classic "Sven, Sven, Sven") was second with 25% and "Agado" for the chemical generation, DJ Otzi's "Hey Baby", came in third with 18%.

The LTLF Writers Award: Ade O'Connor

Ade storms through and wins with a late entry, joining the LTLF team to cover the World Cup from an Irish point of view. The fact that this award got more votes than any other category is cause for a stewards enquiry, but it probably won't stop Ade who had the 'luck of the Irish' and got 37% ahead of Al Gunn who got 33%. Chris Denman came third with 12%, closely followed by match reporter Andrew Brookes (11%), with Matt Chadwick and Tomas Nilsen bringing up the rear. Sadly, no photo of Ade is available but we've got the next best thing with a fine example of his work: 'There's only one Keano!'
