In the ever-changing world of football and the revolving door that is the managerial position at the
City Ground, rumblings can be heard from a distance. The same old fans with the same old moans about team effort and team displays.
The grim reaper is sharpening his scythe ready for yet another visit to
Nottingham. But what can we do?
Firstly, fans can and should start learning to be patient. Gary Megson has brought
nine new players to the club this summer, a monumental effort considering the position we are in. Some have even dropped
two leagues to join us. Others have been grasped from the clutches of clubs in a better position than ourselves with the promise of small fortunes and big rewards. Now, to expect
nine new players, most of which are already starters in the first team, to produce results from the off is frankly an ask that I doubt even Mr Clough could muster.
These very people who are calling for the manager's head after only six or seven games should take a moment and think through their actions. When does it stop? When will you give somebody time to sort out the mess left by others? If memory serves me correctly Frank Clark took
eight points out of his first eight games before the players finally found their feet and were all firmly moving in the right direction, and look what happened that
season! To give Gary six games is frankly unbelievable.
The club needed open heart surgery; there was a lot of damage caused by past players, managers and various other
staff, but these people are no longer here. Failing players and coaches have been removed – replaced by a new regime. A
regime of diet and fitness, a regime that expects impeccable attitude and application 24/7 –
just ask David Johnson, you can see the already transformation from him since last season. To simply ask for all this to work straight away is too much, even for the best managers football can offer.
We have a new squad, with a nice blend of experience and youth fit and healthy and ready to play at a
moment's notice. Playing for pride and trying their all, to expect them to get it right at the first attempt is preposterous. Asking Gary Megson to conjure up 3-0 wins every weekend with champagne football from day one with a team he has worked with for less than
three months is too much.
Have patience. Time is a great healer and time is what everyone needs to get things right. There may well be some trips and falls along the way, but soon we will be riding high. It took Frank
at least 10-15 games to finally get the ingredients right. We can at least afford to give Megson that amount of time to find the winning formula.
It's there, we just need to find it. Gary Megson has never promised us the world –
so don’t expect it!
