Wolves Destroy inept Forest
It’s 12:30, and I’ve just arrived into Wolverhampton. There is a lightly diffused display of gold shirts, and no red to be seen anywhere around the town. I’m getting more and more excited as the interesting, in the least, one way system delivers me to the train station, and the increasing number of Wolves fans are only outnumbered by the huge police following. Unfortunately for I, Wolverhampton was merely a stopping point for me to drop my brother off on return from holiday, and thus I don’t feel any sense of involvement in the proceedings.
Nevertheless, come 3 O clock, I’m all set for the game, and I allow Colin Fray to guide me through the game. I’m quietly optimistic given the return of the exciting Lee Martin, Cohen returning to his more adept position in central midfield, and Nathan Tyson’s return should bring us some pace. My joy was not to last too long however;
After just 13 minutes, and one promising attack involving Tyson and Martin, Wolves took the lead and began to teach the Reds a “harsh lesson” to quote the Forest official site. Iwelumo laid the ball off for talented ex Manchester United midfielder, David Jones, to curl in from 20 yards. Another goal followed, continuing Paul Smith’s run of bad luck in the Forest goal having punched into his own goal inadvertently via the head of Wes Morgan.
Michael Kightly was running Forest ragged, with the Reds’ full backs looking less than comfortable, and helped by one time (or much of the time) Forest target, Matty Jarvis, Kightly was creating chances for the Wolves strikers.
Whilst the likes of Iwelumo weren’t putting away the chances that the excellent Kightly was creating, he evidently made the decision to do so himself, and with the Forest defenders backing off again, he picked his spot from 25 yards and did so delightfully to put Wolves 3 goals ahead.
Having watched a Kightly masterclass, and with little opposition from the Forest ranks, Matty Jarvis decided to get in on the act, tricking past Wes Morgan and delivering a delightful cross for Iwelumo to finish, leaving Wolves with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The second half started with the only positive for Forest fans being that things just simply could not get worse, and actually for a while they were significantly better, with the Reds putting together some better football, and this culminated in a lucky goal similar to that of Smith and Morgan’s own goal earlier.
However, The Reds were not strong enough to make any further impression into the Wolves lead, and the Molineux side took control once again, with Kightly embarrassing both Forest centre backs and then finishing well.
Seemingly as if to rub in the horrific scoreline, Robert Earnshaw, Forest’s talismanic frontman was taken off injured leaving the Reds with 10 men. There is no news on his injury as of yet.
However, whilst the result is obviously of some concern, and leaves some problems to be addressed, particularly those in defence, and most notasbly the full backs, we shouldn’t exaggerate too much. The Reds have had a decent start to the season, look good going forward, and have plenty to be positive about. Bristol City lost 6-0 to Ipswich last season and still ended up in the play off final, Heads up lads!
