| Championship Picks Of The Season |
Another article in response to Kammy’s picks of the season, this time I’ll focus on the Championship season past.
Team – My award for team of the season is going to go to a team that I’ve enjoyed watching all year, apart from when thrashing the mighty Reds that is – Burnley. Owen Coyle’s done a great job with the clarets and they’ve got the great mixture of being disciplined and organised starting with a solid defence, most notable carlisle and duff, protected by Alexander, as well as having a great deal of flair, pace and attacking ability. Burnley have been a fantastic credit to the Championship this year and I wish them luck in the premiership.
Manager - Whilst Owen Coyle, Mick Mccarthy, Alan Irvine and Roberto Martinez get honourable mentions, my award is going to go to Brendan Rogers. Rogers has come in at Watford, a club that genuinally could have gone down, and dont have a great deal of quality, apart from a few special players, spearheaded by Tommy Smith. Rogers took the Hornets to safety in good time and is now being touted for bigger jobs.
Player – Whilst the Championship has been littered with the sort of flair players that generally walk away with these awards, I wanted to make a slightly more considered judgement, and in the end i’m stuck between two defensive midfielders, Lee Carsley and Graham Alexander. Both have defied their years doing a fantastic job in central midfield to help their clubs get promoted, and many plaudits must go to them for having such good seasons in the twilight of their careers.
Goal – I’m going to go for a personal favourite of mine. Dexter Blackstock’s goal against Bristol City was not only a fantastic finish but pretty much provided the beginnning of our relegation final fight back, and for this I will be eternally grateful.
Game – Someone remove the broken record – Forest vs Bristol City. What drama, and what importance. I just cant look past this vital win for the game of the season.
Gaffe – Norwich rating sentimentality over practicality. Bryan Gunn was a decision that just didn’t work out for them, and a good example of why the past should probably be left just there. That’s why I couldnt bear to see Stuart Pearce fail here.
