More memories of the 1979 European Cup Final

Members of the LTLF Forum have been sharing their memories of that glorious night in Munich…

I was there, wrote The Vicar. Couldn’t afford to fly and my car would never have made it, so my brother and I went on one of the 3 or 4 special trains.

I never thought we would get there. The train left Nottingham about 4pm on the Tues and half the passengers were already p**sed. The train made several unscheduled stops with folks getting off and walking down the line in London.

There were rumours that we had missed the ferry, but we got to Folkesstone and set sail. Awaiting us at Boulogne was a train with solid wooden seats and no buffet car for the next 12 hours through Europe, arriving in Munich around midday. Luckily we had numerous cans of Mansfield Bitter with us, the last of which we drank in the ground to toast our famous victory sharing with some Germans who were in the Forest end.

Great atmosphere and a beautiful hot day. We soaked up the pre-match tension with the strong local lager and ogled the Fräuleins.

Exchanged my Forest hat with a Malmo fan after the game. Slept all the way back. A truly memorable experience.

Remember, possesions don’t make you happy, experiences do.

Sydney Red recalls: I too couldn’t afford to fly so booked with Co-op travel; our bus seemed to do an East Coast tour before we took the hovercraft over from Dover. Itinerary timing was hopeless, but there was a decent stopover in Konigswinter on the Rhine which was packed with Forest fans. Not sure whether it was on the way there or on the way back, but I do remember an endless stream of Barton, Trent, Skills, etc, coaches parked alongside the Rhine in the town.

On to Munich where we seemed to have the run of the place. Must admit I would have preferred the Vienna team in the final for a decent crowd atmosphere, but Malmo deserved their place. Unfortunately the tickets were at the side and not with the main Forest group, who appeared to be supplemented by a few Bayern fans. Match was fairly forgettable apart from the goal and the celebrations at the end.

Painted the town red before getting the coach again at 3am. Stopped in Konigswinter again but too late to take advantage of the booked accommodation. Once again Konigswinter and Bonn awash with red and white and a decent drinking session in the town before we departed again at midnight on the Thursday.

Despite a poor game it was a fantastic trip and great to see the friendliness of the Malmo fans and the German hosts.

Finally, SoLred says: My memories? That 12+ hour train ride across France/Germany on SNCF ‘local’ rolling stock – only one step up from a cattle wagon.

Getting sunburned wandering around the stadium park in the afternoon.

One of the worst football matches I have ever seen.

Train ride home took us through London around rush hour – resulted in much re-routing and many, many stops. Obviously the scarves, banners and people hanging out the windows made it obvious what the train was – but every time we stopped there was waving, cheering and thumbs-up from passers-by and windows and hooting from cars. Clough – and Forest – were popular in those days.
