Tomorrow is Justin Fashanu Day
I thought I would make a quick post to acknowledge Justin Fashanu Day, an initiative by the Justin Campaign to mark the anniversary of the former Forest player’s death.
Justin, one of football’s most tragic figures, committed suicide 11 years ago tomorrow (2 May), hence the commemorative day.
The Justin Campaign is a gay rights organisation which aims to combat homophobia in football. They hope Justin Fashanu Day will become more widely recognised in the footballing community and help other gay footballers come to terms with their sexuality.
With barriers of race and gender largely broken down within the game, it is only right that this is the next taboo to go, even though 19 years after Justin came out the idea of an openly-gay Premiership star seems unlikely.
