An Audience with Billy Davies

Billy Davies @ The ApproachAnother splendid “Audience With…” evening at The Approach, this time with Forest’s own WMD – Billy Davies.

“Don’t believe anything you read,” Billy advised us, “…or half of what you hear. Cos it’s bulls**t!”

To be honest, I was expecting the evening to be very diplomatic, filled with very carefully practised responses – after all you could hardly expect to Billy to go off on one at his current and recent employers… well, how wrong can you be!

Arriving on stage to a resounding chorus of “Billy Davies is a Red…he hates D***y”, the twinkle in his eye revealed that this was probably true, and as host Darren Fletcher led the first half of questions, it proved to be the case.

Fletcher’s questions pretty much encompassed the top things inquisitive fans would ask him about:

  • Are you deliberately talking down the team’s prospects to the press? -Yes
  • Are you interested in the Scotland job? -No.
  • Is promotion on the agenda, and is the team ready for the fight? -Yes.
  • Do you enjoy working with David Pleat? – long pause, grin, heckle from the crowd: “You want to f**k him off, don’t you!”, followed by a wink and a raised glass…

Remarkably frank and candid, Billy spent time praising the “stunning” and “magnificent” away support, expressing his desire to shift the away fans out from behind the Bridgford End goal, and explaining about why the reserve team was disbanded. (Turns out he feels the opposition wasn’t of a high enough standard.)

From listening to him, you couldn’t help but feel that he genuinely believes in the team at this time, and that he is absolutely driven towards achieving success at Nottingham Forest.

A couple of not-so-subtle hints about player acquisitions – you get the impression that Nicky Shorey could well become a permanent addition, and it is likely that a recommendation has been made for Gareth Bale amongst others, though in Billy’s words, it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride for the next few months “…but we’ll have the last laugh in May”.

Answer of the night, unquestionably was on the subject of D***y County, and his time there and his treatment by the board, which after a brief pause received the answer: “F**k ‘em!”

…and the question of the night: “Your half-time team talks are brilliant, and they really motivate and inspire the team. Who does the team-talks before kick-off?”. (After the laughter died down, the only response was “Bas**rds!”)

In all, a hugely entertaining night, and from a personal perspective, if I had any doubts as to whether Billy Davies is the right man in the right place, my view now is that he definitely IS the right man for Forest right now. Bring on May 2nd.

Anyone that doubts this man’s abilities as a football manager need they’re heads looking at… The way he has this team playing and the belief they are showing is something we have not seen since i don’t know when, it’s that long ago.

Long may our rise continue, lets really get behind Billy & the boys and we WILL go up!
