Lance Corporal Andy Harrison and Corporal Mark Armstrong by the ‘Robin Hood’ Tree on Hadrian’s WallTwo members of the LTLF Forum – both officers in the armed forces who have served in Afghanistan – have just returned from a trek along the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall raising money for good causes.

Corporal Mark Armstrong of the Parachute Regiment and Lance Corporal Andy Harrison of 21 Engineer Regiment split their sponsorship between Help for Heroes and the Kieron Hill Memorial Fund.

The pair followed Hadrian’s Wall from Solway Firth on the West Coast, to Newcastle on the East, handily arriving in time for Forest’s game at St James’ Park on Monday.

The hike took four days, over a distance of 84 miles, and saw them bed down in pub beer gardens between legs.

They were keen to raise the money in memory of Lance Corporal Kieron Hill, from the Mercian Regiment, who was killed in Afghanistan last May. LCpl Hill was a Nottingham lad and fellow Forest fan, and the Memorial Fund aims to build a war monument in his native Clifton.

LCpl Harrison said: “I had to drive my commanding officer to Otterburn in Northumberland back in October. I saw a sign for the wall on the route and the idea hit me. I had wanted to do something for the Kieron Hill memorial fund for a while.

“With my regiment being in Afghanistan at the moment and all the different service charities Help for Heroes support it was decided to split the cash between the two causes.”

Cpl Armstrong added: “Help for Heroes is a charity I hold very close to my heart after losing a few comrades over in Afghanistan and seeing the wounded come home.”

During their trek, the two lads passed a famous ‘Nottinghamshire’ landmark – a tree at Sycamore Gap known as ‘Robin Hood’s Tree’ after appearing in the geographically flawed film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

They said the craggy terrain proved to be both beautiful and treacherous, or “amazing views but bloody hard work,” in LCpl Harrison’s words.

He added: “There were also the inevitable blisters and Mark was suffering with a few chafing issues towards the end, but he battled on when lesser men would have thrown in the towel.”

Cpl Armstrong said: “Other highlights included the locals forcing us to drink rum until 2 in the morning.”

The boys have so far raised over £1,000 with their walk, but you can still contribute to their sponsorship fund here.
