Like so many Forest fans across the country, today I am feeling a warm sense of satisfaction at the announcement of not one, but two signings at last made official. The confirmed signatures of Paul Anderson and Dele Abebola have brought Nottingham Forest’s success in the transfer market to a total of three secured players, with David McGoldrick having put pen to paper yesterday.

A humiliating 3-1 defeat at home to arch rivals Derby County this afternoon consigned Nottingham Forest to their third lose in a week. There was not much for Reds supporters to be cheerful about come full-time – even the return of goal scorer Robert Earnshaw and the surprise inclusion of Paul Anderson in the starting eleven did little to restore faith in the Reds survival hopes.

A 2-0 defeat at the hands of Birmingham City this afternoon left Nottingham Forest looking worryingly over their shoulders at the relegation mire. Forest remain four points clear but another victory for Doncaster Rovers means that they have now slipped to 19th position in the league table.

Saturday again produced a somewhat disappointing affair, with Forest failing to gain any points come 5 o’clock. However, it was not the slack defending or even the lack of creativity from the midfield that struck me most, but the overall attendance of the game.

It has become apparent during the last two wet and windy days in Nottinghamshire that summer is slipping away from us, relinquishing its grip over the British Isles, and giving way to an altogether more sombre season: that of autumn. It is fitting then, after a summer containing nothing but joy and a sense of hopefulness not felt on the South side of the river for many a year, that feelings of ineffable exuberance are waning.
