Mick arrived at Forest
as Joe Kinnear's assistant in November 2004,
although even at the time many were expecting him to succeed the under-pressure
manager. Indeed, Harford did take over from Kinnear
after his resignation the next month, but he was only to be in charge for six
games.
He got wins over Stoke and QPR, but was not offered the job permanently so ended
his spell at Forest after only three months when Gary
Megson was hired as manager.
Many felt that Harford – who had given up a lucrative position at Luton to
join the Reds – had been hard-done-by by Forest, having not been offered a
permanent contract when he was hired as assistant boss.
After leaving the club he spoke of his disappointment at having not been able to
have a better crack at the job. However, it seemed like a case of wrong time,
wrong place for Harford as Forest couldn't afford to give such an inexperienced
man the job in the middle of a relegation battle.
In February 2005 he was hired by Swindon as Andy King's assistant.
