Darren
Ward joined Forest in the summer of 2001, the only signing of
that year, on a free from local rivals Notts County. He replaced
veteran Dave Beasant who was released that year by David Platt.
Ward is a capable shot-stopper and during his time at County he
attracted a lot of attention for his consistent performances,
even earning himself a place in the Welsh national side. He also
made very good impression on the red side of the Trent with three fine seasons. He did come under criticism for a number of
embarrassing blunders which cost Forest points, but he also put
in some impressive displays under pressure and had one of the
best goalkeeping records in the first division at the end of the
season.
Darren is a Nottingham lad born-and-bred and has often turned
down more glamorous offers of work in order to remain in the
county, probably the main reason for choosing Forest in 2001. It
had been reported that he had been waiting until the end of his
contract at County in case he got an offer from Forest, which he
did. The deal was signed before the season had even finished once
both parties knew it was a good move.
